About Us

What is SevaVotes?

SevaVotes is a national, nonpartisan campaign to get all, especially sevaks (all serving), out to vote in 2012.

Seva (a sanskrit word for service) is an integral part of Dharma* (generally referred to Buddhist, Hindu, Jain, Sikhs, and those inspired by Vedic philosophy,Yoga and Meditation) traditions and sadhana (practice) and is transforming. We serve understanding the whole world is one single family (Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam).  It is an inside out approach to community social responsibility with awareness, connection, and participation as core elements.  These values happen to be central to our civic life, too, whether that be at the most local level or in this year’s presidential campaign.

Our seva, for decades, has influenced the many communities we live in, work and raise our families. We have been feeding the homeless, conducting blood drives, teaching the inner city children, hosting langars, healthcamps….. positively impacting our communities in seva centers in temples, gurudwaras, satsangs, yoga studios, many seva organizations (not-for-profits) and interfaith destinations . But we have not fully engaged in the civic and political process. We have not brought our transformative seva awareness, the voice of social justice to the forefront.

SevaVotes will encourage the millions of Americans who practice dharma* through seva to take their values into the public sphere and into the voting booth.   We will use traditional and cutting edge organizing tools to reach, activate, and encourage these folks to go to the polls on election day—especially in key states where our collective dharma voices will have a noticeable impact

What is Dharma*?

*Dharma or Dhamma means that which upholds, supports or maintains the regulatory order of the universe or Law or Natural Law; a central  concept in eastern philosophy and religion. It also designates those behaviors necessary for the maintenance of the natural order of things.  Therefore dharma may encompass ideas such as duty, vocation, religion and everything that is considered correct, proper or decent behavior.
